A Talk with Troy Holston

Troy Holtson

After long talks with Coach Jordan Fair of Oldsmar Christian about his roster, SG Troy Holston sparked my interest.  A former player at Wharton High School and also standout in Hillsborough County, Holston has elevated his skills and grabbed attention from numerous Division 1 Colleges.  Since transferring to Oldsmar Christian HS and participating in various basketball showcase which helped him land a D1 scholarship to  USF on 08/07/2013.   He chose Coach Heath’s program over Alabama, Kansas State, Marquette, Memphis and Miami (Fla.).  At 6’4” he processes an ability to elevate over smaller guards and shows that he can shoot from different ranges on the court.  With some other added skill sets he should be a good college player.

In a recent conversation with Troy, he comes across as not only being well developed on the court but well rounded in is upbringing.  Monique Holston & Wayne Greene did a fine job with their son Troy.   He stated that his inspirations are his Mother, Uncle and Doubters. “I chose South Florida because it was the best fit for me & I knew I wanted to stay in state. My family gets to come & watch me play. For me its home away from home even though its 20 mins from my house.  I overcame the obstacle of doubt. A lot of people told me I couldn’t play at a high major school & that I wouldn’t get high major offers. I just believed in myself & worked even harder because those people that said that to me motivated me.   I just kept telling myself everyday I was a top player in the country and I am a high major player. In Jesus mane amen”. God has blessed me. Seek ye & ye shall find.”

Bay Area Hoops followed Holston for the past 2 seasons and saw the skill development blossom.  This guy takes adversity and turns it into opportunities.  That’s the thing we look for in student-athletes.  When asked what advice he would give to young players he replied “If he was to give advice to young players that love the game & want to play D1 ball would be don’t let what you like distract you from what you love.  Do everything in excellence & always keep the lord Jesus Christ first in everything you do & he will give you the desires of your heart.”

Good Luck Troy Holston and keep working!
